Alumni Research Talks - 4.0, 16th January to 18th January 2015
Research talks remain an essential part of the learning model in the most premier institutes around the world. Alumni Research Talks (ART) based on a similar idea, promises to be a novel concept with immense potential on the Indian front. It is a 3-day long student-industry-research symposium organized by the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, Computer Science Association and Embryo , BITS PIlani. Featuring research talks by recent BITS graduates currently in Grad schools or working in industry on some really hot research topics, the talks are broadcasted 'live' to the Goa and Hyderabad Campuses of BITS Pilani.
The process of ART begins with a comprehensive survey of the students about their interests centered over Computer Science and its applications. Their expectations and profile of the audience is also taken care of in the analysis. The topics of discussion and their level and detail are hence finalized. Suitable preparatory material is also posted to the registered participants to provide a background and overview of the talks.
During ART, the recent Graduates motivate and guide the students to take up research and related activities. And also direct their minds towards how things truly work in the real world. The talks are video recorded for future reference and each talk is followed by an informal session with the speakers. This provides the much needed time and space for an insightful discussion with the Alumni wherein one can actually meet in person and talk their hearts out to these wonderful BITSian gems.
On the last day, a faculty-alumni dinner is organized which facilitates a fruitful exchange of ideas and a healthy discussion between the two groups about research practices at BITS Pilani and outside as well.
ART had its first season in 2012. It saw a participation of about 660 inquisitive students at Pilani, in addition to the students at Goa and Hyderabad. Besides, ART also saw some students from BITS Dubai visiting Pilani for the event. Some of the most inspiring alumni from BITS Pilani
The arrangements were great! I have all the praise for the way things were handled. I did not expect such VIP treatment.-Aakash Goel
I found communication from the ART team to be very prompt and professional and there was always an open channel to communication to the ART co-ordinators and facilitators. It is very heartening to see that an effort is being made to introduce and promote interdisciplinary research on campus. The talks were very interesting and were ideally timed. I did not sense the audience getting bored despite the length and the number of talks one had to sit at during a day. The technology to let us rope Goa/Hyderabad too was great.-Shravan Kumar
I was impressed to see a few students who wanted to dive deep into the concept presented in the talk, and come up with algorithms of their own-Prashant Kannan
Overall it was a great experience. I enjoyed my time there and although I did not know anyone on campus, the hospitality by juniors was great.-Mayank Mohta
